About this course

You probably know that Ayurveda focuses on strong digestion as the key to good health. Your agni or digestive fire is present not only in the gut but in all of your cells.  Agni drives all types of transformation, digests thoughts and emotions, and coordinates countless physiological processes—including the digestion, absorption, and assimilation of foods, sensations, and experiences into energy. Agni maintains the bodily tissues, overseeing their creation, renewal, as well as their breakdown and destruction.  It gives our skin its luster, and our eyes their sparkle. When agni is compromised, ama or toxins begin to accumulate, blocking the flow of nutrients and energy and starting the disease process.

In this class we will explore different Ayurvedic concepts related to digestion with Dr. Manjiri Nadkarni, MD (Ayurveda), RHN, CBAC.  We will begin with an introduction to the concept of Agni, which will involve exploring the 13 subtypes of Agni and the role of these sub-types in the digestion and metabolism of food. We will also explore the impact of the Doshas on Agni.

Then we move into further categorizing Agni on the basis of its functionality, by exploring the 4 types of Agni- Sama (Balanced), Vishama (Erratic), Manda (Sluggish) and Tikshna (Sharp). Dr Nadkarni will then take you on a deep dive into the impact of these 4 types of Agni on the 7 body systems. The class will conclude with case studies, which illustrate practical dietary and lifestyle strategies to correct any imbalances. In this course you will discover how to restore balance to your patient's Agni to bring them new vitality.
