About this course

Our livers are amazing. This single organ performs at least 500 vital functions, regulates most of the chemicals in your body and is constantly detoxifying our increasingly contaminated environment. Perhaps because of its complexity and also its close relationship to practically every other system, the liver is susceptible to a wide range of disturbances.

This is the first of two Hepatology Masterclasses. Hepatology I covers the fundamentals of liver function, accurate liver assessment and pathology investigation, the major infections and the metabolic disorders associated with the liver.

There is a great deal to understand about the complexity of liver function, dysfunction and how it relates to your patient presentations and their pathologies. Developing a working knowledge of the liver enzymes is highly valuable. Each of these enzymes specify distinct liver issues and their relative levels are highly significant as well.

Lyn Patrick opens the course with an insightful discussion of the functional physiology and biochemistry of the liver. This is a fascinating discussion on the the hepatoportal system, the portal triad, the bidirectional gut-liver axis, the amazing cholangiocyte and much more. Her final presentation shows how common autoimmune liver diseases are and what we can do about them.

The enzymes are covered in depth by Dr Robert Gish MD, a specialist hepatologist. In addition to the well-known enzymes like ALT, AST, GGT, etc. other factors provide lots of insight into liver function. These include hepatitis antibodies, iron saturation, ANA, ASMA, AMA, p-ANCA, alpha-1-antirypsin phenotype, caeruloplasmin, and many more. Chris Farrelly worked closely with Dr Robert Gish and presented a valuable discussion on dietary plans for hepatic conditions.

Mona Morstein present three highly clinically useful presentations in this Masterclass. She starts with the infrequently discussed topic of Bile Acids and Gallstones. Her other two are on Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease/Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis aetiology and treatment.

The liver is a central and critical organs that deserves our full attention and care. This course gives you the must-knows of hepatology.

She is currently faculty for the Metabolic Medicine Institute Fellowship in collaboration with George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
She is also a founding partner and presenter at the Environmental Health Symposium, an annual international environmental medicine conference based in the United States. After the passing of her longtime colleague Dr. Walter Crinnion, she has taken on the job of continuing to educate primary care providers in the area of environmental medicine training through the SpiritMed Certification Course and Crinnion Opinion podcasts.
