About this course

In this presentation, Eric Yarnell takes us on a very interesting discussion about the significant relationship between plant constituents and our microbiome. We can no longer think of herbs as providing component chemicals without understanding the effect of our patient’s gut flora.

Mostly everything we ingest is interacting with the microbes in our gastrointestinal tract. Sometimes the effect is to reduce microbial diversity and function (antibiotics), sometimes the interaction is necessary for absorption and metabolism (dietary fibres and many herbal medicines). A prominent example, and one which Eric begins his presentation with are the plant-derived glycosides. These cannot function in the way that you know without being metabolised by your gut microbiome.

Dysbiosis, therefore, can have substantial effects many on the medicines you prescribe by either reducing their action, modifying their action, and sometimes enhancing the action. Some of your patients are having adverse reactions, or no reactions, to your prescriptions because their gut microbiome is befuddling their metabolism.

Eric presents many examples of herbal and microbiome interdependence and how you can use this relationship to effect better and more reliable patient outcomes.

What you receive:
  • A personalised certificate of completion including continuing education hours
  • Clear protocol explanations from some of the world's top practitioners
  • Clinical pearls for improved practice results
  • Access to your audio and video recordings via the App Store
  • A downloadable PDF of the presenter’s slides
  • Links to all referenced research papers and useful clinical handouts
  • Access to the community hub where you can get answers to your questions

From this course you will

  • How potent your patient’s gut microbiome is at modifying your prescriptions
  • Which gut flora species are most recognised to be metabolising herbal constituents
  • A new mechanism of why some people respond differently to the same prescription
  • How to prescribe probiotics and prebiotics to enhance herbal action
