About this course

There is a silent epidemic going on right underneath people’s noses and it is often completely overlooked by the individual and their health practitioner. And yet has a dramatic impact on every aspect of an individual’s health.

Our mouths are the gateway to the respiratory tract and the digestive system. It is the site of the two most common infections and chronic inflammations in humans - tooth decay and gum disease.

Our oral cavity harbours an enormous number of bacteria. It is perfect environment for many commensals and also potential pathogens. A surprising amount of your patient’s poor health and severe disease is being accelerated by this frequently unrecognised cause.

An infection in the mouth can fester away, often unnoticed, for many years. And for the whole time causing chronic inflammation and poisoning our system. Many chronic, serious health conditions are now linked to an oral causation. These include autoimmunity, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and a range of mental health issues. More acute manifestations of an oral health issue are tension headaches, bad breath, There are many more and the list is growing.

It is imperative that we take serious consideration of the oral environment in each patient, evaluate them thoroughly and address issues that may be contributing to their chronic health conditions.

This is a foundation topic that all clinicians need to have under their belts.
